2019 SBRP Spring Preview

The vernal equinox is still 20 days away and yes, it snowed across much of the metropolitan Washington, D.C area this morning, BUT the first of March marks the beginning of climatological spring and after a winter where the polar vortex came for a visit and above normal snowfall gave us plenty of shoveling opportunities, we’re more than happy to declare winter over and embrace the extra daylight and (hopefully) warmer temps (just as soon as next week’s cold snap is over with). Spring brings a BUNCH of racing opportunities from our clients, fourteen in total, and a variety of distances (over 100 combined miles) on both road and trails.

The EX2 Adventures Spring Backyard Burn (SBYB) is a series of 5 and 10 mile trail running races held on some of the best trail networks in the Northern Virginia Area. All the courses include a mixture of forested fire roads, twisty hiking trails, stream crossings, grassy fields, and minimal pavement. Check out the EX2 site for full details and to register:   https://www.ex2adventures.com/trail-running/spring-backyard-burn-trail-running-series/

March means St. Patrick’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day means running (also beer drinking we’ve been told) and as luck would have it, Pacers Running has two great opportunities to show off your finest green running gear (and maybe have a beer afterwards). The Four Courts Four Miler starts and finishes in front of Ireland’s Four Courts pub which means you get to have a very fast first two miles as you careen down Wilson Blvd and when you get back up the hill you can enjoy a pint! But wait, there’s more! The following day, on actual St. Patrick’s Day, you can join Pacers and several thousand of your closest friends at the Washington Monument for the 5K, 10K, Double (yes you can race BOTH the 5K & 10K), or Kids Dash. Also, start thinking of what costume you’ll wear. The competition for the costume contest at this race can be fierce. At the end of March EX2 puts on the Rosaryville Half Marathon and 10K Trail Run. Conveniently located right off the Capital Beltway, Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro, MD offers fun and challenging terrain, that is also beginner friendly. Not overly technical in nature, this race course is perfect for an early season trail running race. April showers may bring May flowers, but it also brings our favorite 5K race series, the Pacers Running Crystal City 5K Fridays! Every Friday evening in April you can have your picture taken at our Photo Booth and then run a fast, flat course through the buildings of National Landing, er, we mean Crystal City! Runners will receive post-race drink tickets that can be used at select nearby watering holes. Check out the race site for full details and to register: https://www.runpacers.com/race/crystal-city-5k-fridays/

The last weekend of April is the Pacers Running Parkway Classic a 10 mile or 5K run from George Washington’s Mount Vernon to Old Town Alexandria. This is without a doubt one of the prettiest road runs you’ll ever experience and one of your only opportunities to have the GW Parkway all to yourself (well, and a few of your running friends). Check out the race site for full details and to register: https://www.parkwayclassic.com

In May our friends at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad, a philanthropically operated organization that provides state of the art emergency medical, fire, and rescue services to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area and surrounding Maryland communities, have their annual fundraiser, the Rescue 1 Run 8K. This is a great organization and if you haven’t run an 8K before, running this race would be a great way to set your 8K PR! Our final event of the spring season brings us back to our roots with covering an adventure race. EX2’s Greenhorn AR offers competitors a gateway into the sport of adventure racing. This 4 hour sprint race is designed with the beginner in mind, but remains fun for everyone no matter the skill or experience level! The navigation is straight forward, the trails are well marked, and the maps that we provide are excellent. The mountain biking takes racers over gravel roads, some pavement, and semi-technical singletrack trails.  Finally, the paddling takes place on a clear lake.
