Cool air and dry trails set the tone for the opening race of the 20th annual Fall Backyard Burn Trail Running Series. More than 350 runners spread out through the singletrack at Lake Fairfax Park, weaving over bridges, along the lake, and through low creek crossings under a bright fall canopy.

This year’s race also brought back a familiar mark from the early years — the classic flame logo in its original bold, weathered type — a nod to two decades of Backyard Burn history across Fairfax County parks.

From the first wave to the final finisher, the day moved fast and light — a clean start to another fall season of trail running in Northern Virginia.
