The switch to Standard Time gave runners an extra hour of sleep — and a perfect excuse to stay out late the night before. By morning, Riverbend Park offered its own reward: cool, crisp air, gold and green leaves overhead, and the steady rhythm of trail shoes tracing the Potomac’s edge.

The second stop in the EX2 Adventures Fall Backyard Burn Trail Running Series wound through singletrack and ridgeline climbs where the canopy filtered just enough sunlight to make the roots glow. A mix of familiar faces and first-timers lined up for the 5- and 10-mile races, trading the city’s concrete for the sound of wind and water.

From the first creek crossing to the last sprint across the field, Riverbend delivered what trail runners crave this time of year — clean footing, good company, and the kind of quiet that only happens between footsteps.
